Light Pavilion House I New Farm, Brisbane

Light Pavilion House is a contemporary extension of an existing traditional Queensland cottage. 

​

10m wide sites in Brisbane are common but challenging. Once regulatory setbacks are considered, homes can feel somewhat narrow. 


To alleviate this, our design approach was to emphasise changing volumes of space within the extension. At the rear we have elevated a 4m high timber-lined ceiling above the Living area & maximised glazing for natural light to increase its volume & spatial quality. A 3m high plasterboard ceiling sits above the Kitchen & Dining spaces.

Finely detailed integrated joinery is a key feature of the new extension.

The courtyard plan has been designed to open up to the morning sun & turn its back on the harsher Queensland afternoon western sun.

 

A tree in the courtyard helps shield the sun to the glazed area of the Kitchen.

The Kitchen is orientated to face the courtyard & acts as a transitionary space between the old cottage & new extension.

Timber-framed windows reference the typical noggings of stud wall construction. Fixed glass & louvres allow abundant natural light & natural ventilation to suit a subtropical climate.
